16 teams to compete in maiden Fada’s Unity Cup
The inaugural edition of the Femi Fadairo Football Competition, dubbed “Fada’s Unity Cup,” has kicked off, featuring 16 teams competing in a knockout format. The competition, which will conclude on Sunday, is being held at the Aquinas College football pitch in Akure.
In the opening matches, M-Max FC triumphed over Aso FC 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw, while Ijapo Estate Eagles FA won 3-0 on penalties after a draw against Danfold FC.
Earlier, in his address, the Sponsor of the Competition, Femi Dennis Fadairo, who is the SSA to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Community Engagement, Central, said it was part of his efforts to give back to the Grassroots. Fadairo emphasised that it was also a way to support the government’s initiative to create employment opportunities and steer the youth away from the streets.
He urged all participating teams to maintain discipline and avoid any actions that could tarnish the competition’s reputation, noting that the success of this first edition would influence the organisation of future editions. “I am delighted to sponsor this tournament at this time, to help boost sports at the grassroots and nurture and promote talents,” he said.
The state coordinator of the event, Mr. Niyi Omojowo, expressed gratitude to the sponsor for his commitment to grassroots football. Omojowo noted that if more individuals followed Fadairo’s example and sponsored similar tournaments, sports in the state would see greater development.
The final match of the competition is scheduled for Sunday at Aquinas College.
