2 in court over assault

Two men have been dragged before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ondo, for assaulting two police officers and also preventing their team from performing their lawful duty.

The defendants; Elijah Francis, 22 and Friday John 30 were alleged of obstructing the police officers while carrying out their lawful duties and for unlawful assault on February 24, 2023, at about 7 am at Ayetoro camp via file- Oluji.

Francis was alleged of biting one Inspector Garba Mustapha, on his left ear and thereby causing him severe injury.

The charge sheet read in part,” That you, Friday John on February 24, 2023, at about 7 am at Ayetoro camp via ile-oluji Magisterial District did obstruct one Inspectors Garba Mustapha and Adebayo Gabriel, while performing their lawful duty and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 197 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Volumes 1 Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendants are facing a three-count charge bothering on conspiracy and obstruction. But they pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Gbenga Akinsulire said he would call three witnesses to testify in the case, hence he applied for a date to enable him transfer the case file to ile-oluji for proper prosecution.

Lawyer for the defendant, Barrister Isreal Ikuemonisan, applied for the bail of the defendants in most liberal terms.

Chief Magistrate C.E Ijeh, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Ijeh adjourned the case till March 23, 2023, for hearing
