2 officers killed as IGP orders clampdown on Borno police attackers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an immediate crackdown on those responsible for the attack on Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Borno State, which claimed the lives of two police officers.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced this in a statement on Friday, January 10, 2025.

He confirmed that the directive followed Thursday’s explosion at the police facility.

According to Adejobi, the IGP instructed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) overseeing Zone 15, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, to deploy sufficient resources and personnel to apprehend the attackers.

The AIG is also to work in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the culprits are identified and brought to justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force will hold those who jeopardise and disrupt the security arrangement and safety in Nigeria accountable,” Adejobi said, as investigations into the attack continue.

Egbetokun extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers, pledging that their sacrifices would be remembered.

He also assured that the victims’ entitlements and benefits would be promptly paid to their families.

Providing further details, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, revealed in a statement on Thursday that the officers had engaged the attackers in a gun battle.

“On January 9, 2025 at about 12:10 am, unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attempted to invade Nganzai Police Division, gallant officers who were on watch repelled the terrorists, after series of exchange in a gun battle,” Daso said.
