2 sentenced to death for armed robbery

Two men; Emeka Alieze and Dada Ojo have been sentence to death by an Akure High Court for their involvement in armed robbery.

 The defendants were brought to court for armed robbery at kilometer 4 Akure-Ilesa expressway, Akure, at about 8:30 pm on September 9, 2016.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the five count charges preferred against them when it was read to them before hearing commenced.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Olajumoke Ogunjebi said that the defendants robbed several people with their money and property .

Ogunjebi called five witnesses and all of them gave their testimonies in the court that the defendants were the people who robbed them.

One of his witnesses , Segun Akinyokun, of 34 Danjuma area, Akure said that he was at his duty post at Fenwa filling station situated at Isinkan market, Akure when somebody came into the filling station and informed them that armed robbers were operating at Oke-Aro area ,Akure, saying suddenly, some people came to the filling station with guns and asked them to lie down on the ground and face the ground .

He said they were dispossessed of all he had on him, adding that they robbed some customers, and the manager of the filling station of some money.

 Another witness, Sergent Samson Adebayo of State Anti- cultism section ,Akure testified in the court that he was in the office on September 14, 2017, when one Adeola Adekunle came to report that her car was snatched at gun point by a gang of armed robbery.

“My team was detailed to investigate the case, immediately, we started our investigation and we were able to arrest some suspects and recovered the stolen Nissan premier with registrations No. FKJ474EE.

We brought the suspects to the station and I recorded their statements under caution and read over to them and agreed they were correct and they signed.

Later we visited the scene of crime in company of the suspects and the victim. After the conclusion of the investigation the suspects were taken to the magistrate court.

After a series of arguments by the prosecuting and defence counsel, the court agreed that Emeka Alieze and Dada Ojo committed the offence contrary to Sections 6(b) 1,2(a) &(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Ademola Bola, said that Emeka Alieze and Dada Ojo were found guilty of the offence and sentenced them to death.
