Ahead of next month general elections in the country, the National leader of Pan-Yoruba Socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, has raised the alarm over what he called serious danger ahead.

Chief Fasoranti who spoke with The Hope in Akure, the Ondo state capital, described violence as a major source of his concern and warned that violence is an  evil wind that blows no one any good.

He advised all Nigerians to pray fervently against possible bloodshed during the elections, saying there is a big problem before the country.

The Afenifere leader decried what he called the idea of winner takes all, which he noted, is now paramount in the mind of the people.

“We have a very big problem before us. There are so many problems which needed to be attended to. This is an election year and unless we are very careful there will be violence all over the place. Everybody is anxious to be in government, so we have to be prayerful, very very prayerful too.

He warned politicians in the country against causing violence and bloodshed in the forthcoming polls.

“The idea of winner takes all is paramount to the mind of the people; people want to have it all and so we must be very careful”, he emphasised.

He charged Nigerians to have a focus as we approach elections and place less emphasis on materialism but work hard.

INEC had fixed February 16, this year as Election Day for Presidential and National Assembly positions. It also fixed March 2 for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls.

Chief Fasoranti who described 2019 as an anxious year for politicians, particularly warned political gladiators to be careful and eschew violence before, during and after the general elections.

The elder statesman noted that Afenifere is committed to peace of the country, saying that the group has been preaching and praying for peaceful elections.

“If there is violence it will not augur well for anybody. So, we must be very careful and prayerful too to avoid bloodshed in the country”, he added.

On the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari by INEC to serve as head, presidential election collation centre, Fasoranti disclosed that such appointment must satisfy the wishes of the electorate to avoid violence in the land.

“It is true that Zakari is Buhari’s niece but she has to be very careful and satisfy the electorate, but if she doesn’t, there will be violence and violence doesn’t augur well for any country”, asserted.

It would be recalled that Zakari, a Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), came under attacks from some political parties including the PDP following her appointment by INEC as head, presidential election collation centre.

The PDP described Zakari as Buhari’s niece, and alleged that the appointment of the president’s relation to preside over the collation of votes from presidential election was an apparent ploy to rig the 2019 presidential election in Buhari’s favour.

But in a swift reaction, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, described the allegation as a lie, explaining that Zakari was not Buhari’s blood relation but only married to a member of Buhari’s extended family.
