2020 Budget: Avoid unrealistic figures, Speaker urges MDAs

Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDA’s), Boards and institutions in Ondo state have rounded  off the year 2020 budget defense before the House of Assembly committee on finance and appropriation.

It would be recalled that the state government had on December 19th 2019,presented a total of N177,943,835,273 billion to the assembly for 2020 fiscal year for consideration. The governor tagged the document “Budget of Growth”.

The document was thereafter committed to the house committee on Finance and Appropriation for scrutiny.

While declaring the three day marathon budget defense open, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bamidele Oleyelogun, warned the various MDAs in the state to avoid frivolous requests or unrealistic

figures in the 2020 budget proposal.

The speaker said the Finance and Appropriation Committee under the chairmanship of Sunday Olajide would not approve any unrealistic figure by MDAs that would prevent the 2020 budget from being fully

implemented after being signed into law.

He said the lawmakers resolved as direct representatives of the people, to give the budget an accelerated consideration inspite of the enormity of work currently at hand.

“A very realistic budget is non negotiable. We will try hard to be stricter than before, so that we can come up with a realistic budget at the end of the day,” the Speaker said.

The speaker equally charged the state internal revenue board and other income generating agencies to improve on their efforts at increasing the revenue profile of the state.

On his part, the Chairman of the committee, Sunday Olajide said the house had further strengthened the accounting system in the state through legislation, adding that this had been yielding results.

He said the committee’s interaction with MDAs during the current year’s budget appraisal showed tremendous improvement in term of performance on both recurrent and capital components of 2019 budget.

In an interview, he expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance of MDA’s adding that they did not make frivolous requests during the defense.

Speaking with journalists shortly after defending his office’s budget, the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde said that the government would not relent in its efforts at delivering good governance to the people of the state.

Also, the state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan affirmed that all sectors will be given adequate attention in the fiscal year.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Adegboyega Adefarati hinted that 2020 will be a fantastic year for all stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

The Chairman/Editor in Chief of Owena Press Limited, The Hope titles, Sir Ademola Adetula, informed that apart from working on the contents of the newspaper to make it acceptable as the first newspaper of choice in the state, the management is looking at the prospect of setting up a good commercial press to ensure that the organisation is economically stable.

Speaking, the Chairman, state Internal Revenue Service, Mr Tolu Adegbie posited that so many innovations have taken place in the organisation to make it achieve the set target in the next fiscal year .
