2020: 17 aspirants emerge in PDP, 3 in SDP

No fewer than 17 gubernatorial aspirants have so far showed interest to pick the ticket  to run for the 2020 governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State.

Some of them with their banners hoisted at the party’s secretariat in Akure, the State capital included the governorship candidate of the party in the 2016 governorship election, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, former Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Mr. Adedayo Fadahunsi and running mate to governorship candidate of the party in 2016, Mr. John Ola Mafo.

Others are: former Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Olusola Ebiseni, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Banji  Okunomo, Mr. Bamidele Akingboye, Mr. Sunday Erewa and Mr. Ogunwa Oboli.

There is no female aspirant among the eight that have showed.

Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Zadok Akintoye, affirmed that  17 aspirants seeking for the ticket of the party.

Source from  All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, said there has not  been any aspirant  are currently that has notified the party but unconfirmed source said  minimum of three aspirants were warming up to pick the  party’s governorship  ticket .

However, there are indication that the incumbent Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, former  Secretary to the State Government and Attorney-General  under Olusegun Agagu’s administration, Mr. Isaac Kekemeke and erstwhile Commissioner for  Information and Director of Campaign for Akeredolu in 2012 governorship election, Mr. Banji Ayiloge may show interest.

Though, the interest of the aspirants have not been made known to the party, only the incumbent Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, is believed would run for a second term in office during various government functions in the state.

It was reliably gathered that  no aspirant has shown interest at the party level to pick the gubernatorial  ticket of the party for the next year election.

According to the  State Organising Secretary of the APC, Mr. Charles Fagbounka,  explained that the belief the incumbent governor will run for second term under the party has made other people in the party not to show interest in the governorship ticket of the party.

“In a ruling party, no one will like to contest with the incumbent governor unlike when the APC had about 46 governorship aspirants who contested for the party’s governorship ticket in 2016 in the state because it was in opposition.

“The PDP, which is now in the opposition has 17 aspirants, ” he stated.

Also, the Social Democratic Party in the state disclosed that only three aspirants, whose their names were not made known to The Hope have showed interest.

Investigation further revealed that there was no female aspirant among the three aspirants.

The State Chairman of the SDP, Chief Korede Duyile, who declined to disclose the names of the aspirants said their names could not be made known to the public now as part of the strategies of the party ahead of the poll.
