The All Progressives Congress, APC, Ondo State chapter has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to improve on conduct of elections and tighten its belt to achieve the much anticipated electronic voting in the 2023 general election.
To this end, the party said the INEC needs to prepare in earnest for the anticipated electronic voting for Anambra and 2023 polls to be realistic.
The State Chairman Caretaker Committee of the party, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, stated this in an interview with The Hope.
The electoral body had earlier disclosed that it was reviewing the already adopted technologies for elections such as the Card Reader and the recently introduced INEC RESULT VIEWING (IReV), which enables people to view polling unit results realtime as the voting ends.
It explained that with existing use of card readers, saying that new technologies that can work seamlessly with electronic voting in 2023 would be introduced.
Adetimehin called on the commission to live up to expectation, which would give room for free and fair election as well enable more people to participate in electoral process in the country.
The chairman, who noted that the electronic voting would reduce thuggery, violence as well as cost and stress on election day said this could only be achieved if the Electoral Act is reviewed and passed into law by the National Assembly.
He maintained that all the necessary processes to make electronic voting achievable should be put in place.
“My fear is that we don’t plan ahead. INEC should buckle up and rise to its responsibility by bringing more innovation into the electoral system of the country.
“Proper planning will enable the commission to actualise its aims and objectives.
Electronic voting should all have been actualised by now and INEC should not use fire brigade approach.
“This is essential for politicians to be aware and live by it because awareness is part of election.”he said.
