2024/25 NPFL: Sunshine Stars edge Enyimba 2-1 in Ijebu Ode

Sunshine Stars on Sunday secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Enyimba FC on Match Day 33 of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.
Goals from strikers Elmer Arunta and Waheed Adebayo were enough to seal the win for the Owena Whales, despite a spirited fightback from the People’s Elephant.
The keenly contested encounter saw Sunshine Stars display resilience and determination to snatch all three points, despite conceding a first-half goal from Enyimba’s Christian Nnaji.
Speaking after the match, striker Elmer Arunta expressed delight over the hard-fought victory, describing it as a morale booster for the team.
“It was a difficult game, but we remained focused. This win will definitely motivate us going forward,” Arunta said.
On his part, Sunshine Stars coach, Akinfolarin Bobola, also shared his thoughts on the outcome, describing the win as a relief following recent disappointing results.
“We needed this. It gives us a push. We still have work to do, especially on the players’ physical strength, but I believe we are heading in the right direction,” he said.
Meanwhile, the team manager and Chairman of the Sunshine Stars FC Caretaker Committee, Mr Tokunbo Akinyelure, praised the players for their doggedness and dedication, dedicating the victory to the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, supporters of the club, and the people of the state.
“Our boys showed real fighting spirit today. This win is for Governor Aiyedatiwa and the good people of Ondo State. I also want to appreciate our supporters here in Ijebu Ode — they came out in large numbers, and their support meant a lot,” Akinyelure said.
Sunshine Stars will next travel to Port Harcourt for a Match Day 34 clash against Rivers United.
