2025 IWD: FIDA Ondo advocates for greater female representation in judiciary

The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ondo State branch, Mrs. Bolanle Olafunmiloye, has called for increased female representation in the judiciary sector, emphasising the vital role women play in delivering justice.

Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day themed “Women in Justice, Women for Justice,” held at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Centre in Akure, Olafunmiloye highlighted the commitment and dedication of female judges in upholding fairness and equity.

The event, tagged “Gavel and Gather with Female Judges in Ondo State,” drew esteemed judges, magistrates, lawyers, and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), among others.

She stressed the need for gender balance in the judiciary, noting that women bring unique perspectives that help shape a fairer legal system.

“This event is not just to celebrate women in the judiciary but to explore ways to strengthen justice, especially for victims of gender-based violence,” she stated.

Reaffirming FIDA’s commitment to protecting women and children’s rights, the chairperson encouraged women to be aware of their legal entitlements in the face of ongoing societal challenges.

Guest speaker at the event,Justice Alero Akeredolu, underscored the importance of women using their legal positions to improve access to justice for women and children.

“By virtue of our own experiences, we understand the struggles other women face. Even as judges, we recognise that injustices still exist within the system, and we must be proactive in addressing them,” she said.

She urged female legal professionals to embrace challenges as opportunities to drive meaningful change.

His remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Akure branch, Onimisi Friday Umar, encouraged female judges to persist in advocating for women’s rights and ensure they pass the legacy of justice to future generations.

“Nigeria is making progress in female representation in the justice sector. With more women in legal positions, we can secure a better future for the country and the world,” Umar stated.

The event reinforced the significance of female participation in the judiciary and the need for continuous advocacy for gender equity in the legal profession.
