The Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring food sufficiency and promoting healthy diets as it joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 World Food Day in Akure.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Permanent Secretary, Forestry Sub-Sector, Segun Odusanya, said the state would continue to prioritise agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and food security.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, had the theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.”
Odusanya further revealed that the Federal Government plans to recruit 1,000 forest guards for each state to secure forest reserves and farmlands. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to support farmers, distribute farm inputs and complete a modern veterinary hospital in Ondo town to boost livestock production.
Representing the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Mrs. Foluke Daramola, Permanent Secretary of the Agric Sub-Sector, described agriculture as one of the major sectors of the state’s economy and urged residents to embrace urban and backyard farming as a way to enhance household nutrition.
She noted that the government is collaborating with partners like Food and Agriculture Organisation [FAO] and ActionAid to improve food safety and reduce post-harvest losses.
Speaking with Journalists, Mrs. Daramola said the state would continue to promote food security through innovation, education and strong partnerships.
Delivering the keynote lecture, the Chairman of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, Dr. Olanrewaju Isaac, urged Nigerians to return to indigenous food sources and eat balanced meals.
He said healthy eating is not about wealth but knowledge and warned that excessive intake of processed foods contributes to lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Omoniyi, in an interview with Weekend Hope, emphasised that healthy diets are achievable for all Nigerians through awareness and proper food choices. He advised families to eat moderately, diversify their meals and rely more on local produce.
Farmers from different parts of the state also showcased fresh and processed farm produce, including crops, livestock products and locally refined foods in a colourful exhibition that added glamour to the event.
