25-year-old takes own life over hardship

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Dagbolu community in Osogbo, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the untimely death of 25-year old Joseph Abodunrin.

The young man, known for his ever-present smile and encouraging demeanor, reportedly took his own life, after battling severe depression linked to the rising cost of living in the country.

Family sources revealed that Joseph had been struggling with the harsh economic realities that have affected many Nigerians in recent times.

His cousin, Grace Abodunrin, took to social media to express her devastation, describing Joseph as a pillar of support who concealed his own struggles behind a façade of joy.

“I still feel shattered, so many words, yet unprocessed. You were the best brother. You encouraged us all, but you chose to voice out in a place we never imagined. You hid it all from us, going about with fake laughter and smiles. Now, we can’t get over it,” Grace lamented.

Before his death, Joseph had posted several distressing messages online, hinting at his deteriorating mental state.

In one such post, dated January 31, he expressed his internal conflict, stating that if not for his siblings, he might have considered ending his life earlier.

The deceased highlighted the optimism and dreams of his younger family members as the only thing keeping him going.

On March 24, the day tragedy struck, Joseph’s final messages painted the picture of a man overwhelmed by despair.

He apologised for feeling like a failure and expressed his inability to continue battling his inner demons. In a poignant farewell, he urged others to persist in their pursuits, remain hopeful, and never compromise on their dreams.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, ASP Akeem Adeoye, stated that he was unaware of the incident. But he assured that investigations would be initiated.

“I am not aware of it. Maybe the family does not want it public. But I will update you on any developments,” he said.

This tragic incident has reignited discussions on the importance of mental health awareness and the need for stronger support systems, especially during these economically challenging times.
