28-year abandoned electricity project: Igbatoro community seeks Governor’s intervention

Residents of Igbatoro in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State have passionately appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to revive the long-abandoned electricity project in the community, an initiative that has remained stagnant for 28 years.

The residents expressed deep concern over the continued lack of electricity supply, describing it as a major barrier to development, investment, and quality of life in the affected areas.

The residents spoke during the inaugural meeting of the Igbatoro Community Development Union (ICDU), held at the residence of community leader, Chief Dapo Filani, in Akure, the state capital.

The meeting drew together several stakeholders, including political representatives, traditional leaders, youth and women leaders across the 24 units that make up Igbatoro Ward 4.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Chief Dapo Filani and Mr. Julius Adebayo, chairman and secretary respectively, the community leaders said the electricity project, initially launched during the administrations of former Governor Olusegun Agagu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has been left in limbo for nearly three decades.

“Our people have waited too long for light. The 28-year abandonment of this project is not just unfortunate, it is a tragedy that has held back our progress,” the communiqué stated.

The leaders recalled that Governor Aiyedatiwa, during his campaign, promised that Igbatoro would be connected to the national grid, noting that the proposed reconnection would require the installation of 40km of wired poles across three strategic routes, Scalp Filling Station to Ala, Imafon to Kajola-Ehin-Ala (Falaye Farm), and Ala-Molato to Ilu Daada, using several transformers, some of which have already been vandalised due to long neglect.

“This is a community with hardworking farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs. Electricity will unlock our full potential and bring long-awaited development to our people,” Chief Filani stressed.

The people also reaffirmed their commitment to unity, development, and partnership with the government, just as they expressed their appreciation to the Governor Aiyedatiwa, for his strides in infrastructure, agriculture, and security.

They lauded the governor’s fulfilment of campaign promises, particularly the ongoing dualisation of the Oke-Aro–Idanre Road, describing him as a “Talk and Do” leader in the mould of his late predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The leaders also commended the governor for his swift intervention in restoring peace to areas of Igbatoro previously affected by insecurity. Special recognition was given to security operatives, especially the Amotekun Corps, whose presence in communities such as Familugba, Ago Oyinbo, Egbeta, Iludaada, Molato, Aruleko, and Ala Igbatoro has helped stabilise the region.

In a passionate appeal, the community also requested the elevation of traditional rulers in the area to the status of kings, citing the rapid development and strategic location of Igbatoro, which shares boundaries with five local government areas, including Okada in Edo State.

As the largest political ward in Ondo State, housing over 223 communities and sharing boundaries with five local government areas, including Okada in Edo State, Igbatoro deserves equal attention in developmental planning,” the communiqué added.
