3 Osun students shot, hospitalized

Three students of the Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, have been reportedly shot by gunmen suspected to be cultists near the campus premises

The unfortunate incident occurred near a barber’s shop in Amuta Junction, Ilesa, where the victims had gone to charge their mobile phones.

The victims shot were a male student and two females.

They were said to have sustained serious injuries and  rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for treatment.

What led to the shooting had yet to be established as at the time of filling this report.

But a student who pleaded anonymity, said the perpetrators were believed to be cultists who engaged in fraternity war with some rival groups in the area.

“I don’t know what led to the shooting. But we heard gunshots at a barber’s shop in Amuta, where the three students had gone to charge their mobile phones.

“One of the victims was shot at the stomach, but he was immediately rushed to the hospital and still alive,”he said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kehinde Adeleke, said details of the perpetrators of the crime were not  yet  known.

He assured efforts were on to apprehend the suspects.

Adeleke said, “On Sunday, July 23, 2023, around 9pm, it was gathered that three students (one male and two females) of the Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, were shot by unknown gunmen while charging their phones at Amuta junction.

“The students sustained high degrees of bullet injury. The victims have been rushed to Uniosun Teaching Hospital Osogbo, by residents of Amuta community. The students were later referred to OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.

“Our men in collaboration with the police are hunting for the perpetrators.”

Meanwhile, four suspected cultists have been arrested by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the State Police Command and members of Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service in Osogbo.

The four suspects were arrested at the Olugunna area of Osogbo by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Group of Osun Police Command and the members of Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service during the raid of criminal hideouts.

Contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspects were nabbed when the anti-cultism squad raided some areas.

He said investigation into the matter is still in progress, assuring that all those involved in the shooting will be apprehended soon.
