35th AFCON: Nigeria drawn against Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania

With eleven months until the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, the Super Eagles have discovered their group stage opponents following a colourful draw ceremony at the Mohamed V Theatre in Rabat on Monday evening.

The three-time champions are placed in Group C alongside Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles, Uganda’s Cranes, and Tanzania’s Taifa Stars. Nigeria will kick off their campaign against the Taifa Stars.

Ahead of the draw, Super Eagles’ Head Coach Éric Sékou Chelle expressed confidence in his team, stating, “Nigeria has a good crop of players globally, and we believe we are up to the task.”

Historically, Nigeria has faced all three teams at different stages of the competition. The Eagles played Tanzania in the 1980 AFCON opener, winning 3-1 before securing their first continental title. They also defeated Tunisia 4-2 in the opening match of the 2000 AFCON but lost to the Carthage Eagles in the 2019 Round of 16. Uganda, meanwhile, has been a challenging opponent, including a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the 1978 AFCON.

Nigeria legend Mutiu Adepoju, an AFCON 1994 winner, expressed optimism about the team’s chances. “Given the quality of our players, their recent AFCON performance, and their club exploits in Europe, I am confident we have a team capable of competing favourably and potentially winning the trophy for the fourth time in Morocco,” he said.

Other notable groups include hosts Morocco leading Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, while holders Côte d’Ivoire face a tricky Group F with five-time winners Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique. Seven-time winners Egypt head Group B, battling South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe.
