An Ondo Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, ordered that a 51-year old man, Adedeji Adewale be remanded in Segede Correctional Centre for alleged scam.
Adewale, whose said he lives in Ibadan ,Oyo state, was arraigned on a four-count charge of felony wit stealing and obtaining money by false pretence.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the four counts against him.
The police prosecutor, Bernard Olagbayi, told the court that Adewale and others at large conspired to commit the alleged offences.
He told the court that Adewale criminally and unlawfully obtained the sum of N16,500,000 from one Akinubi Suleimon with pretence to supply him dry cocoa beans which defendant defaulted and immediately transferred the same amount to unknown account and it was later discovered that he did not process any dry cocoa beans.
Olagbayi also added that the defendant was arrested through tracking in Ibadan.
He said the incident occurred on January 14, 2025, at Sabo road Ondo, Ondo State.
According to him, the offences committed are punishable under Sections 516, 383, 419 and 408 of the Criminal Law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
The counsel to the defendant, Okoye O pleaded with the court to grant the defendant bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Omofolarin O.A. who did not take the plea of the defendant, said due to the nature of the case,the court will need time to rule on the bail application.
She ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Segede Correctional Centre, Ondo, pending the determination of the bail application.
She urged the defendant and his counsel to use the period to connect his people and settle the matter
The case was adjourned to February 18,2025.
