By Adedotun Ajayi

In a touching act of compassion to mark his 60th birthday, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted the prerogative of mercy to 40 prisoners, demonstrating his commitment to rehabilitation and the transformative potential of second chances.

This decision follows recommendations made by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, underscoring the governor’s desire to cultivate a justice system that values reform over punishment.

Among the recipients of this act of mercy, 15 convicts will be granted immediate release, effective from January 12, 2025.

Additionally, a number of death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while others will see their prison terms reduced, offering a renewed opportunity for reintegration into society.

The announcement was made by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The signing of the release orders coincides with the governor’s 60th birthday, adding significance to the occasion through this generous act.

It is important to note that Governor Aiyedatiwa opted to forgo birthday celebrations in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who passed away last weekend.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision is in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Dr. Ajulo commented, “The Council’s deliberations were enriched by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and esteemed community members, focusing on the nature of the offenses, duration of incarceration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.”
