Aiyedatiwa marks low-key birthday, extols virtues of late SSG

…pardons 40 prisoners as he turns 60

It was a low-key 60th birthday thanksgiving church service as dignitaries, political associates, family, friends and admirers of Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa stormed the Chapel of Grace at the State Government House in Alagbaka, Akure, on Sunday to thank God.

Speaking at the event, the governor  expressed gratitude to God for His faithfulness, saying the day is a  milestone. Reflecting on his life journey, he thanked the people of Ondo State for their trust and support during the 2024 gubernatorial election, which secured his victory for a at the November 2024 governorship poll for a second term in office.

His words: “No one receives anything except it is given by God. The victory at the poll was not just a testament to the will of the people but a divine mandate. I am deeply grateful for this privilege and remain committed to serving the people of Ondo State with integrity and dedication,” he noted.

The occasion also doubled as a thanksgiving service to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. 

The governor reiterated his commitment to supporting the families and dependents of fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for national peace and unity. 

Hr reflected on the solemnity of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, describing it as a poignant moment to honour the sacrifices of military personnel who lost their lives in service to the nation.

“This day is a solemn reminder of the selfless service of our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for the unity and peace of our nation,” he said.

“As we reflect on their sacrifices, we must extend our deepest gratitude to their families and loved ones who continue to bear the weight of their loss. Today’s service is dedicated to their memory and the ideals they stood for.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa called on citizens to actively support veterans, widows, and dependents of fallen heroes, particularly through contributions to the Nigerian Legion’s Emblem Appeal Fund, which is dedicated to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.

“Our prayers must be matched with tangible actions. I encourage everyone to support our veterans and their families, particularly those who are physically challenged. By donating generously and extending a hand of fellowship, we can uphold their legacy and foster a spirit of inclusivity and support,” he added..

Aiyedatiwa also commended the professionalism of security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, during the 2024 election and urged their continued cooperation as the state prepares for the forthcoming local government council elections. 

He also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure their children are not exploited by desperate political actors, urging all to maintain peace during the polls.

During the service, the governor paid tribute to the late Hon Temitayo Oluwatuyi, the immediate past Secretary to the State Government, describing him as a loyal and selfless leader. A minute of silence was observed in his honour.

In his sermon, Bishop Felix Adejumo, General Overseer of Agape Church, centred his message on gratitude and faithfulness, drawing from Psalm 89:1 and Psalm 34:1-4. 

He urged the congregation to reflect on God’s enduring love and faithfulness in their personal and leadership journeys.

The Bishop also highlighted the courage and sacrifices of the armed forces, encouraging the congregation to remain steadfast in their trust in God, who delivers and protects in uncertain times.

Deaconess Lola Fagbemi, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, expressed gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his dedication to the welfare of widows of fallen heroes. 

She announced that the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations would culminate on Wednesday with a final parade, wreath-laying ceremony, and empowerment of widows at the Government Cenotaph in Akure.

The event featured prayers for the widows and dependents of fallen heroes, the state, and the nation at large. A Bible lesson was taken from Isaiah 40:28-30 by Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Major General John Lar.

Dignitaries at the service included the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; State Chairman of the APC, Mr Ade Adetimehin; Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa; Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip; members of the State Executive Council; Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji; traditional rulers; religious leaders; heads of security agencies; and other eminent personalities.

Meanwhile, as a touching act of compassion to mark his 60th birthday, Governor  Aiyedatiwa, has granted the prerogative of mercy to 40 prisoners, demonstrating his commitment to rehabilitation and the transformative potential of second chances.

This decision followed recommendations made by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, underscoring the governor’s desire to cultivate a justice system that values reform over punishment.

Among the recipients of this act of mercy, 15 convicts will be granted immediate release, effective from January 12, 2025.

Additionally, a number of death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while others will see their prison terms reduced, offering a renewed opportunity for reintegration into society.

The announcement was made by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The signing of the release orders coincides with the governor’s 60th birthday, adding significance to the occasion through this generous act.

It is important to note that Governor Aiyedatiwa opted to forgo birthday celebrations in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who passed away last weekend.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision is in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Dr. Ajulo commented, “The Council’s deliberations were enriched by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and esteemed community members, focusing on the nature of the offenses, duration of incarceration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.”

He further remarked, “This compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to extend grace and mercy to the said convicts, which represents a vital component of his administration’s ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.”
