Seven persons including a toddler narrowly escaped death yesterday in Akure, when a tricycle popularly known as ‘Keke Maruwa,’ tumbled inside a gutter, after its tyre burst.

The incident which occurred around 3:45pm, close to the gate of Owena Press Limited, along Reuben Fasoranti Road, Ijapo Estate axis in Akure, involved a green tricycle marked BDJ019VJ.

The Hope Metro gathered that the quick intervention of passersby and some staff of the company, saved two of the passengers from choking to death as they quickly pulled them from under the tricycle.

The driver of the tricycle was said to be at top speed and lost control when the rear tyre burst in motion.

It was gathered that the driver while struggling to control the tricycle, somersaulted into the drainage beside the road.

The tricycle driver, however, did not sustain  serious injury.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told The Hope Metro that the tricycle coming from the Agbogbo area of the town at top speed, somersaulted into the drainage with six passengers on board, including three children.

“ The front tyre of the tricycle burst and we saw the driver struggling with the ‘Keke Maruwa’.

“ While trying to control the tricycle, it eventually tumbled into the gutter. It took the help of some sympathizers to rescue the passengers and the baby.

“A man and a child suffered severe injuries, while some suffered minor injuries.”

The driver of the tricycle described what happened to him as miraculous, adding that he was happy to see the passengers alive.
