The Student Union of the Adekunle Ajasin University has called on federal government to dualize the Akungba-Ikare road and put an end to the incessant occurrence of trailer accidents within the community.
In a statement signed by the Student Union President of the University, Comrade Ogunsanmi Kolade, the union decried the incessant occurrence of trailer accidents on the Akungba-Ikare road, stressing that many lives and valuables have been lost to the accidents.
The union, however called on the government to also improvise immediate measures that will regulate the operations of trailers on the roads till the dualization is done.
“Following incessant and indeed avoidable occurrence of trailer oriented mishaps in Akungba, It has become imperative as student union leaders of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko to register our gross dissatisfaction and also call on the federal government and all other relevant stakeholders to accelerate efforts towards dualizing the road.
“It is indeed worrisome that despite various outcries of the students and members of the community, occasioned by loss of lives and properties attributable to this menace, the needful is yet to be done.
“It should be recalled that the student union leaders, upon the manifest of the horrible accident in late January, which led to the death of 13 students and destruction of millions of properties wrote several letters to appropriate authorities to do the needful in averting recurrence of such menace. It is indeed, regrettable that the road still witness this menace, a development which have continued to create palpable fear amidst the student populace and members of the community who ply the road.”
“While it is necessary to concede to the fact that the dualization of the roads cannot happen overnight, the federal government, through concerned agencies can redirect the movement of these trailers to late mid-nights, pending the time in which a permanent solution (Dualization) will be instilled”, the statement said.
