The Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has temporarily relocated its Secretariat to the main gate of the institution following a fatal truck accident that occurred on Wednesday.
In a statement issued and signed by the Union’s President, Comrade Salami Akeem, and the General Secretary, Comrade Bakare Jamiu Abiodun, the Union said the decision was taken to coordinate safety efforts and maintain close proximity to the scene of the tragedy.
Describing the incident as “a fatal blow to the university community,” the Union said the accident involved a heavy-duty truck that lost control after suffering brake failure and rammed through barricades.
It recalled that the Union had previously engaged local stakeholders, including the Alale’s Palace, to address safety concerns on the Akungba-Ikare road.
The statement dismissed reports suggesting that the Union had allowed trucks to ply the restricted route, describing such claims as “false, mischievous, and misleading.”
Comrade Akeem urged the government to impose a permanent ban on heavy-duty vehicles on the route and ensure that justice is served for the victims, saying the incident was “an injury to the entirety of Nigerian students.”
The Union commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives, including a 200-level student of the Library and Information Science Department, assuring the university community of its continued commitment to student safety from its temporarily relocated Secretariat
