‘Adegbenro, a philanthropist, dedicated officer’

Tributes continued to pour in for the late Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, who died last Thursday.
Adegbenro died during a very brief illness at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owo and was buried at his home town, Ilara-Mokin last Friday.
Before he was buried at about 10am, sympathisers had already flooded his residence at Ilara-Mokin at the early hour of the day.
The Chief Imam of Akure Kingdom, Shiek Abdulakeem Yayi Akorede presided over the Islamic rite for the deceased with officials of the National Center for Disease Control NCDC on ground to ensure necessary protocols were carried out.
Members of Ondo State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun as well as members of the State Executive Council were parts of the dignitaries at the burial.
Sheik Akorede eulogized the late medical doctor as a remarkable personality and philanthropist. He also offered prayers for the family of the bereaved, who could not hold back tears as the remains of the late commissioner was laid to rest.
Mr Oloyelogun, members of Ondo House of Assembly and Commissioners present, including the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Emmanuel Igbasan and Commissioner for Works, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, described the late “Dr Crown” as a selfless philanthropist, saying the vacuum he left cannot be filled by anyone.
Adegbenro’s death, which many described as shocking, also attracted eulogies of eminent individuals, groups and professional bodies.
In a statement, a member representing Akure North & South Federal Constituency and Vice Chairman, House Committee on Poverty Alleviation, Mr Adedayo Omolafe commiserated with the family of the late commissioner, saying his death was a rude shock and a monumental loss to the state and the nation at large.
“You are such a great philanthropist, exceptionally brilliant and a dedicated medical practitioner who dedicated his active life to the service of mankind. It is regrettable that you have to pay the supreme price in your effort to save lives amidst the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.
In his own condolence message, the Chief Executive Officer of the Klick Konnect Networks and Manager, Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub, Ore, Chief Alex Oluremi Ajipe, described late Adegbenro as a firm man and stabilizer.
He condoled has family and the state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Ondo State Chapter in a statement described the late Commissioner as selfless and diligent frontline worker in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
A political support group, Ibi Giga Ambassadors also condoled the family of the late health professional and Governor Akeredolu.
A statement signed by the Secretary of the group, Adetunji Adeniyi reads, “Dr. Wahab Adegbenro was a man with a kind heart, a loyal party man to the core and a philanthropist per excellence who died in the course of saving others. The vacuum he left behind will be hard to fill, but we take solace in the Creator; May the Almighty Allah grant him Al Jannah Firdaus”.
Late Dr Wahab Adegbenro was aged 65.
