Adelami celebrates Christmas with inmates, advocates for total submission to Christ

By Sade Adewale

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olayide Adelami, has urged inmates at the Owo correctional centre to reflect deeply on the word of God and embrace Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Adelami who also serves as the board chairman of the Prison Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), made this call during a visit to the Owo custodial centre, where he joined the inmates in celebrating Christmas.

In his message, he referenced the book of Isaiah, chapter 9, verse 6, highlighting the role of Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” born to bear the burdens of all people, including those incarcerated.

“Jesus was born to shoulder the responsibilities of everyone in the world, including you,” Adelami told the inmates.

“No matter how heavy your burden may seem, He offers peace, and when you accept Him, He cleanses your sins, granting you a new chance at life.”

The deputy governor emphasised that Christmas is a time for sharing God’s love, kindness, and mercy.

“Today, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, I am here to remind you of His unconditional love and to share His message of hope.”

Adelami, who is also committed to the welfare of inmates, explained that the PFN aims to provide hope to prisoners and ease the transition for those recently released.

He detailed initiatives by the fellowship, such as preaching the gospel in custodial facilities and addressing inmates’ needs to make their imprisonment more bearable.

One key proposal discussed was the implementation of pre-litigation resolutions to reduce the burden on courts and alleviate overcrowding in correctional facilities, similar to a pilot scheme currently operational in Lagos State.

Additionally, Adelami outlined plans for a rehabilitation centre aimed at equipping newly released inmates with essential skills to aid their reintegration into society.

In appreciation of the deputy governor’s visit, Assistant Controller of Corrections Wale Ojo, the officer in charge of the facility, expressed that the gesture would inspire the inmates to adopt better behaviour and avoid activities that could lead them back to the correctional system.
