Adeleke, Makinde move to end Osun-Oyo border clashes

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State have launched peace initiatives to quell the recurring border clashes between Iwo and Lagelu local government areas of their respective states.

The move comes ahead of the anticipated release of the National Boundary Commission’s (NBC) report on the disputed boundary.

The governors, who met during the week at Governor Makinde’s Ibadan residence, jointly agreed on urgent steps to de-escalate tension. As part of their resolution, both leaders directed their deputies to jointly engage with affected communities and pay visits to flashpoints.

Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in a statement, disclosed that the meeting stressed the need for peaceful dialogue and settlement of all outstanding issues. The deputy governors were tasked with interfacing with leaders of the warring Lagelu and Iwo communities to foster understanding.

In addition, the two deputies are to investigate other contentious boundary matters, notably the ongoing dispute between Orolu Local Government in Osun and parts of Ogbomoso in Oyo.

The governors also condemned the reported cross-border raids by aggrieved groups, urging parties to exercise restraint and adhere strictly to the rule of law in resolving conflicts.

“The National Boundary Commission had earlier undertaken a mediation visit to the disputed axis, gathering oral and documentary evidence to delineate the true boundary between both states,” the statement noted.

“However, the NBC is yet to release its report, despite persistent follow-ups by stakeholders—an information vacuum now being exploited by belligerent groups.”

The last one month has witnessed a spike in violent incidents, with villages in Iwo Local Government coming under attack. In retaliation, Lagelu groups have also reported assaults on their members and communities.

At the meeting, Governor Adeleke underscored the deep historical ties binding Osun and Oyo, emphasising unity and the need for a peaceful resolution.

“Our people are one and we must peacefully resolve any outstanding issues. I commend my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, for this proactive step. Our deputy governors will handle the matter with the urgency it deserves,” Adeleke was quoted as saying.
