Adeleke urges calm ahead of LG polls, vows crackdown on violence

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has cautioned against any attempt to incite violence in the wake of the recent Appeal Court ruling, warning that those seeking to exploit the judgment to disrupt public order, will face the full weight of the law.

The governor has directed security agencies across the state to remain on high alert and apprehend anyone, regardless of status, found engaging in actions that threaten peace. Offenders, he stressed, will be brought to justice.

Adeleke’s warning was conveyed in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and made available to journalists in Osogbo.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to non-interference in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22,  2025, the governor assured stakeholders of the electoral commission’s independence in conducting a credible poll.

He commended the peaceful conduct of political campaigns so far and urged candidates to prioritise issue-based engagement with voters rather than resorting to intimidation or violence.

“As a government, we are committed to free and fair elections. We have closely monitored the preparatory activities of the state electoral commission and assure the public that we respect its independence in conducting credible elections.

“We are highly educated in Osun State, and our literacy level is at an all-time high. This is not a state where residents can be deceived. They read and analyse court rulings and political issues critically. I urge our people to prepare for February 22. It is an opportunity to vote for your preferred council chairmen and councillors.

“We are a nation governed by law. The judiciary is the last hope of the common man. We must avoid misrepresenting and misinforming the public about court proceedings. Spreading fake news is a punishable offence under the law.

“We have credible reports of plots by certain opposition elements to incite unrest in Osun State. I strongly warn those planning such acts to desist, as they will face serious consequences. As the Chief Security Officer of this state, I have directed security agencies to deal decisively with any instigator of violence, in line with the rule of law. We will not allow this state to be plunged into unnecessary conflict.

“Democracy is about ballots, not violence. On February 22, go to the polls and make your choice peacefully. Osun is a bastion of democracy, and we are fully prepared to defend our democratic heritage,” the governor stated.
