By Josephine Oguntoyinbo

Barring any hitch, the two kilometres water channels at the Adesunkojo River Jordan Site in Ode Irele town, Irele Local Government area of Ondo State will be completed in the next two months.
Also expected to be completed within that time, is the water drainages and culverts being constructed at Ayeka gully site in Ayeka community, Okitipupa Local Government area.
Ondo State Coordinator, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, Adewodun Marcus gave the assurance when he conducted the State House of Assembly Committee on Environment round the projects.
He assured that work at both sites was in top gear to ensure safety of lives and property.
It was revealed that during rainy season, residents of the two neighbouring communities, Ode Irele and Ayeka had found it very difficult to go about their daily activities as a result of erosion.
It was informed that at some points, school children were asked to stay back for fear of getting drowned.
Worried by the situation, in May this year, the present administration awarded contract and was supported by the World Bank to address the problem.
The NEWMAP State Coordinator explained that all teething problems earlier obstructing the projects had been overcome.
At Ijoka Akure, the Project Manager, Richard Akande said the two kilometres road project with water channels is 70% completed adding that the company would speed up work to deliver the project on schedule.
The Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi who expressed satisfaction with the work done, said despite the rains the agency was obviously desirous to complete the project in record time.
While urging contractors not to compromise standard, he advised them to maintain cordial relationship with the communities.
Mr. Ogunmolasuyi appreciated Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for intervening to safeguard lives and property of the people.
Other members told the agency to make good its promise, noting that the House will not watch the people suffer as a result of erosion on the roads.
The Committee later visited Princess Oluyemi Bajowa, the Regent of Ayeka Kingdom, in Okitupupa Local Government.
While welcoming the legislators, Princess Bajowa appreciated them for the visit, and pledged support for its speedy completion.
The monarch equally thanked Governor Akeredolu for the projects noting that it will improve socio-economic activities in the areas.
Also the Chairman, Committee Project, Chief A. Akinmorin, the Ojabo of Irele kingdom, assured of the community’s support in ensuring the project was delivered in no distant time.
