The Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, has advised newly admitted Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) students to take the teaching profession as both a career and a calling.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, gave this advice at the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony held at the institution in Ondo.
Represented by his deputy, Prof. Abayomi Olufemi Olajuyigbe, he described the ceremony as momentous, stating that the event marked the beginning of the students’ academic journey at the institution.
Prof. Akintunde reminded the matriculating students of what is expected of them, saying, “As educators, you play a vital role in shaping the minds of future generations.”
He urged them to use their time wisely in the university, noting that the various courses offered are tailored to meet the needs of 21st-century educators, with a focus on innovation, creativity, and critical thinking.
Speaking on the PDE programme, the don said it is designed to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and competencies required to excel in the teaching profession.
“The programme’s primary objective is to enhance your teaching effectiveness, improve your subject matter expertise, and foster a deeper understanding,” he stated.
Prof. Akintunde also urged the students to demonstrate a high level of commitment and discipline during their stay in the institution through regular attendance, active participation in class activities, and timely submission of assignments.
He commended the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) for introducing the PDE programme in the university, stating that AFUED is proud to collaborate with the council in ensuring the success of the programme.
He said, “This partnership ensures that our programmes meet the highest standards of quality and relevance, aligning with the TRCN’s goals of promoting excellence in teaching and learning.”
Also delivering a goodwill message, the Ondo State Coordinator of TRCN, Mr. Adesina Akande, congratulated the newly admitted students and applauded their decision to choose the PDE programme.
According to him, the PDE “has the same status as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), both in content and certification.”
He added that upon completion of the PDE programme, TRCN would conduct a Professional Qualifying Examination Integrated (PQEI), followed by the students’ induction into the teaching profession.
He advised the students to take their studies seriously and partner with the organisation in the task of sanitising the teaching profession in the country.
