Renewed hostilities by suspected herdsmen have reportedly led to the death of at least five people in the Moon community of Benue state.
The Hope Metro learnt that the incident occurred in Moon, Kwande Local Government area, while the inhabitants were asleep at night.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the armed herdsmen stormed the area at about 11:30 p.m., when the natives were deeply asleep.
It was reported that the herdsmen, who were armed to the teeth, began shooting sporadically upon entering, resulting in the loss of at least five lives.
The Hope’s investigations revealed that the herdsmen fled to an unknown destination after carrying out the attack.
When contacted, the Council Chairman, Vitaris Neji Vitaris, stated that he had received information about the tragedy, which involved herders unleashing violence, causing deaths, and destroying property.
The council boss expressed regret, stating, “Since we assumed duty after the recent successful polls, I have been working on finding a permanent solution to resolve the lingering crises and ensure peaceful coexistence in the council.”
He condemned the recurring clashes between herders and farmers, noting that such incidents must be curtailed during this administration in the state.
Efforts to reach the Benue Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful, as her mobile line could not be reached despite several attempts.
