To boost productivity and ensure food sustainability, Agbeladun Agricultural Empowerment NGO has trained farmers in Ondo State on the proper use of agrochemicals.
The training, tagged Agrochemical Mastery 2025, was held in Akure in collaboration with Hangzhou Agrochemical Nigeria Limited.
Stakeholders at the training emphasised the importance of proper agrochemical usage in achieving improved agricultural production, enhancing farmers’ livelihoods, and growing the state’s economy.
The Director of Agricultural Services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mrs. Olabisi Ajayi, described the programme as a valuable initiative aimed at educating farmers on the appropriate selection and application of agrochemicals.
She said, “Many of them complain about agrochemical usage and selecting the right product for each crop, hence the need for sensitisation.”
She added that the programme would help farmers identify the most suitable agrochemical brands for their crops, especially in mixed cropping systems.
Mrs. Ajayi also encouraged farmers to visit the Ministry and take advantage of the support available under the current administration.
The President of Agbeladun Agricultural Empowerment, Mr. Franklin Fadoju, said the programme was initiated in response to the poor outcomes many farmers have experienced due to the misuse of agrochemicals.
He criticised the government’s lack of proactive support for agriculture, alleging that many intervention programmes have been hijacked by the wrong individuals.
“The government should work through verified outlets, NGOs, and associations to reach real farmers,” he added.
Mr. Fadoju urged the government to provide small-scale equipment and inputs through established agencies like OSAEC, targeting certified farmers’ groups to ensure resources reach genuine beneficiaries.
The General Manager of Hangzhou Agrochemical Nigeria Limited, Mr. Wisdom Itigwe, trained participants on the use of various agrochemicals related to different agricultural products to achieve desired outcomes.
He also advised farmers on the need to utilise essential protective items such as boots, hand gloves, spectacles, and pullovers to support their farming operations.
The event concluded with the distribution of agrochemicals to participants by the NGO.
