A 39-year-old man, Michael Ogundepo, who allegedly obtained the sum of N1, 670,000 from a lady on the pretense of procuring visa for her, has been docked at an Akure Magistrates’ Court.
Ogundepo, who claimed to be a visa agent was arraigned before the court by the police charged with obtaining money under false pretenses.
According to the prosecution, M.l. Osimen, sometimes in the month of June, 2023 at Ondo Road, Akure, the defendant fraudulently defrauded one Miss Fagbuyiro Ajetomobi, for his failure to fulfil the promise to procure a United States of America visa for her.
The offence, the prosecution said, was contrary to Section 419 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006 and punishable under the same section.
When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor prayed for an adjournment to enable him study the case file. While the defence lawyer, T.O Gbadebo, did not oppose the prosecutor’s application.
But Gbadebo urged the court to admit his client to bail in most liberal terms, promising that he would provide a reliable surety.
The trial Magistrate, Mr. Damilola Sekoni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum.
The defendant could not meet the bail conditions, hence he was remanded at Olokuta Correctional Centre.
The magistrate adjourned the case till October 18 ,2023 for hearing.
