Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), has sensitized Medium Small Micro and Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ondo State on African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) with a view to encourage them to leverage on it to boost Nigeria’s export market.

Addressing participants at a one-day sensitization programme held in Akure, Executive Director of NEPC, Dr. Ezra Yakusak said going by findings, too many businessmen and women are not aware of the existence of AGOA legislation thus NEPC resolved to embark on the sensitization to provide adequate information on the subject matter.

He said AGOA is a duty free and quota free platform for over 6400 products from sub sahara Africa to the US and affirmed that Nigeria is yet to optimize the benefit as expected due to lack of knowledge of the documentation and procedures for export under AGOA.

While urging participants to take advantage of the legislation which would end in less than four years, he expressed optimism that with the understanding of the procedures, MSMEs would be better positioned to leverage on the advantages to boost Nigeria’s export in the US.

Also speaking on AGOA, Femi Aderibigbe explained the AGOA platform as a trade bill that allows export that is duty free and quota free exploring eligibility status of products, documentation requirements among other key issues.

Earlier in his welcome address, Mr. Macpherson Fred-Ileogben said the United States of America established AGOA in response to windows of opportunities it has for Nigerian MSMEs, exporters and potential exporters noting that NEPC in its usual drive to promote and develop non oil export organized the workshop.

While expressing high hopes that the initiative would increase the market share for Nigerian non-oill products in multi billion dollar export market in the US, Macpherson implored all participants to take advantage of the programme to effectively leverage on AGOA platforms to expand Nigeria export and value in the US market.
