The Ondo State Government has reiterated its support for the growth and sustainability of cooperative societies as a vital tool for inclusive economic development across the state.
Speaking at a one-day seminar organised by the Ondo State Cooperative Federation (ODSCOFED) in Akure for cooperative members from MDAs, higher institutions and local governments. The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperative Services, Pastor Adebayo Ademuwagun, declared the government’s unwavering commitment to building an enabling environment where cooperatives can thrive.
“We are committed to working closely with you to develop policies and programmes that will strengthen cooperative societies in Ondo State.
The seminar, themed “Effective Financial Management for Sustainable Cooperative Development,” focused on capacity building, financial discipline, and aligning cooperative practices with global standards.
The Commissioner commended ODSCOFED for its proactive efforts, describing the initiative as essential for repositioning the cooperative movement.
He, however, warned against malpractice within cooperative societies, including the failure to hold Annual General Meetings, property acquisition without due process and poor loan management.
He stressed the importance of transparency, urging committees to strictly adhere to state cooperative laws and bye-laws.
Pastor Ademuwagun urged cooperators to tap into opportunities at the Ondo State Cooperative College for further training and encouraged alignment with the Institute of Cooperative Professionals of Nigeria (ICOPRON) to promote professionalism and consistency in the sector.
In a post-event interview with The Hope, he encouraged farmers, artisans, and traders to emulate civil servants by joining cooperatives, pointing out the financial support and business advantages that come with membership.
