Aiyedatiwa calls for love, support at Christmas carol

By Adedotun Ajayi

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has called on the people of the state to continue supporting his administration’s vision for development and to reflect the virtues of love, kindness, and generosity during the Christmas season.

Speaking during the 2024 State’s Service of Carols and Nine Lessons held at the International Centre for Culture and Events (The Dome) on Thursday, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised the true essence of Christmas as a time for reflection and renewal of values.

“This season is a testament to divine goodwill towards mankind, unfolding the great plan of redemption, worship, and praise to the Almighty God for His benevolence,” he said.

The governor expressed gratitude to God for the peace and stability witnessed in the state over the past year, particularly during the November 16 governorship election.

“We serve a living God that truly loves us, the Almighty who overlooks our imperfections to rescue us from the vicissitudes of life. Of remarkable testament to His endless grace is the peace and calmness we witnessed across the state, where we coasted to an unprecedented victory. It is a collective victory which we have since dedicated to God and the good people of Ondo State,” he stated.

Reflecting on the achievements of his administration since assuming office in December 2023, Aiyedatiwa highlighted several milestones, including the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦73,000, ongoing infrastructure projects, and improvements in education, security, and agriculture.

“Our impacts in education, agriculture, health, judiciary, security, and other critical sectors of our economy are salutary. To the glory of God, our dear Sunshine State is being perpetually celebrated as one of the safest and most peaceful states in Nigeria, thus making the state an investment destination,” he said.

The governor also unveiled his administration’s new development agenda, ‘OUR EASE’, which he described as a strategic framework to build on the gains of the outgoing Redeemed Agenda. He explained that ‘OUR EASE’ prioritises areas such as order and security, technological advancement, efficient healthcare, sustainable agriculture, and education.

“We pledge to pursue this vision vigorously and conscientiously. We seek your continued loyalty, cooperation, support, and prayers for our administration,” he appealed.

Aiyedatiwa urged the people of Ondo State to embrace modesty and reflection during the Yuletide season. “Christmas is not just a day; it is a frame of mind. A good conscience is a continual Christmas. Our celebration must embody the virtues and principles of Christ, for Jesus Christ is the reason for this season,” he reminded the audience.

He further called for patience and understanding as Nigeria undergoes economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that these changes are crucial for collective growth. “Change may be uncomfortable, but it is often necessary for progress. We must, therefore, work together to build a better future for our beloved state,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa, drawing inspiration from the words of Genesis 1:26-31, the Ninth Lesson which he read during the occasion, emphasised the divine authority and purpose bestowed upon humanity by God.

The governor concluded his address by wishing the people of Ondo State a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, reiterating his administration’s commitment to good governance and the welfare of the people.

Earlier in his sermon, the Ondo State PFN Chairman, Bishop Joshua Kolawole Opayinka, drew his message from Luke 2:8-10, a passage that captures the announcement of Christ’s birth to the shepherds in the field.

Reflecting on this scripture, he emphasised the significance of the angel’s message of great joy, which was not only for the shepherds but for all people.

He highlighted the humility of the setting, where ordinary shepherds became the first recipients of the glorious news, stressing God’s inclusive plan of salvation.

Bishop Opayinka encouraged the congregation to embrace the joy, peace, and hope that the birth of Christ brings to the world, urging them to reflect this light in their lives and share it with others during the Christmas season.

The governor was joined at the well-attended event by key government officials, including the deputy governor, Olayide Adelami; members of the State Executive Council led by the Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi; Chief of Staff, Segun Omojuwa; members of the State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, represented by Chris Aiyebusiwa; judicial officers led by the State Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola; religious leaders; traditional rulers; permanent secretaries; and other dignitaries.

Also present was the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, the Archbishop of Ondo Province, among several other men of God, while the invited choirs rendered various soul-lifting renditions.

Highlights of the event included the cutting of the Christmas cake, choir renditions, and prayers for the state and the nation.
