Ondo State-born legal practitioner based in Lagos, Princess Opeyemi Adebayomi, in this interview with ‘Demola Obadofin, appraises Nigeria’s legal system, the state of the economy, female participation in politics, and the prospects for national greatness in the emerging world order.

In tune, the princess from the ancient community of Ile-Oluji in Ondo State, is enthused with the performance of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa right from the time the mantle of leadership fell on him, in December 2023, till date.

Could you say a bit about your background?

I am a Partner at Comate Solicitors and Managing Director at Comate Properties Ltd., where we provide legal and real estate advisory services. What is your impression of Nigerian politics in the face of democratic practice globally?

Nigeria has made commendable progress in its democratic journey, particularly with improvements in electoral processes, judicial independence, and civic engagement. However, challenges such as electoral irregularities, voter apathy, and weak institutions persist. While the government has taken steps toward electoral reforms and digital voter registration, more effort is needed to ensure greater transparency, issue-based politics, and inclusivity in governance. Strengthening democratic institutions and fostering good governance will further align Nigeria with global democratic standards.

As a lawyer, how would you rate the country’s justice dispensation system, especially as it relates to the less privileged in society?

The Nigerian justice system has taken steps toward accessibility, including legal aid services and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. However, the less privileged still face barriers such as high legal costs and slow judicial processes. The government’s recent digitisation efforts in the judiciary are commendable, but there is a need to accelerate court reforms, enhance legal aid funding, and streamline case management to ensure faster and fairer justice for all.

How can Nigeria’s law enforcement system be fine-tuned to check disturbing cases of human rights abuse from our law enforcement agents?

Accountability is key. Law enforcement agencies must undergo comprehensive human rights training, and there must be strict enforcement of disciplinary actions against erring officers. Independent oversight bodies should be empowered to investigate cases of abuse without political interference. Additionally, body cameras, public complaints commissions, and community policing can help improve transparency and build trust between security agencies and the public.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State was recently sworn in for a tenure of four years. What are your expectations from the new government?

Governor Aiyedatiwa has already demonstrated commitment to governance through continuity and stability in state affairs. As he embarks on his four-year tenure, the expectation is that he will consolidate on ongoing projects while prioritising economic development, infrastructure, and social welfare programmes. His government should also focus on attracting investments, strengthening local businesses, and ensuring transparency in governance to further improve the lives of the people.

Before he was inaugurated on February 24, Aiyedatiwa had been in the saddle for over a year. How would you rate his performance?

Governor Aiyedatiwa has made commendable strides in governance, maintaining stability in the state during a transition period. His administration has kept critical sectors running, including infrastructure and education. However, moving forward, there is an opportunity to implement more people-centered policies, particularly in job creation, economic empowerment, and health sector improvements. With a full tenure ahead, there is optimism that he will build on these foundations for greater impact.

The womenfolk have been complaining of being marginalised in Nigeria’s political space. If you agree, what is the way out?

There has been progress in women’s participation in governance, with more women assuming leadership positions in recent times. However, there is still room for improvement. Encouraging political parties to adopt gender-inclusive policies, providing mentorship for women in politics, and implementing laws that mandate greater female representation will help bridge the gap. The government’s support for women-focused initiatives is commendable, but sustained efforts are needed to ensure long-term change.

The Nigerian economy is believed to be bad, more so with increasing poverty and low income. What advice do you have for the government and the citizenry for a turnaround?

The government has made efforts to stabilise the economy through investment in agriculture, infrastructure, and digital innovation. However, with rising inflation and economic hardship, more attention should be given to job creation, SME support, and social welfare programmes. Strengthening policies that encourage local production, skill development, and financial inclusion will help drive economic resilience. Citizens, on the other hand, should explore entrepreneurship, digital skills, and financial literacy to navigate the evolving economic landscape.

If given a chance to be in charge of state leadership, what remarkable impacts can you make?

If given the opportunity to lead, I would focus on strengthening business-friendly policies, digital transformation in governance, and people-oriented economic reforms. Enhancing the ease of doing business, promoting youth empowerment through technology and entrepreneurship, and improving access to quality education and healthcare would be key priorities. Additionally, fostering transparency and participatory governance will ensure policies are aligned with the needs of the people.
