By Adedotun Ajayi

The Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has declared that the commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Gbangbalogun Axis Road in Akure represents a crucial milestone in his administration’s drive for infrastructural renewal aimed at transforming urban spaces and improving residents’ quality of life.

The Governor made this statement on Friday during the commissioning ceremony held opposite Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Isegun, along the Gbangbalogun axis of the state capital.

Describing the event as a landmark achievement within his administration’s first 100 days in office, Dr Aiyedatiwa emphasised the government’s focus on delivering meaningful governance through the “OUR EASE” agenda — a policy framework prioritising infrastructure, social development, and economic efficiency.

“This event, occurring within our administration’s first 100 days, unequivocally underscores our resolute commitment to impactful progress. This road project is a strategic intervention designed not only to ease traffic congestion but also to stimulate economic activity and improve public welfare,” he said.

The Gbangbalogun road, which links Irowo Road to the busy Arakale–Oke-Aro–Idanre corridor, had for years been in a deplorable state. The Governor noted that pre-intervention assessments revealed extensive pavement failure, severe cracking, potholes, and structural decay, rendering the road almost impassable and a burden to motorists and commuters alike.

He stressed that the rehabilitation was about more than just road construction; it was about creating a resilient urban transport network that reduces travel time, facilitates access to residential and commercial areas, and improves logistics for traders and transport operators.

“The Gbangbalogun axis is a vital urban artery. Our intervention here forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy that ensures improved access, boosts economic vibrancy, and reduces vehicle maintenance costs for our people,” he added.

Governor Aiyedatiwa further highlighted that the timing of this road’s rehabilitation coincides with ongoing work on the larger Arakale–Oke-Aro–Idanre Road, which was recently flagged off.

He explained that repairing the Gbangbalogun link ahead of the main arterial route was a calculated and proactive move to prevent future traffic bottlenecks and support efficient traffic distribution in the area.

“This project reflects holistic urban planning. It ensures that as work progresses on the larger road network, this link will already be optimised, allowing for seamless vehicular movement and integrated traffic flow,” he said.

The Governor commended the technical teams, supervising consultants, and the contracting firm responsible for the project, praising their adherence to high engineering standards, strict quality control, and timely delivery.

“The successful and timely execution of this project is a resounding testament to the unwavering dedication of our technical teams and partners. They have delivered a high-quality asset that meets the most exacting standards,” he stated.

Dr Aiyedatiwa also expressed gratitude to residents and road users in the Gbangbalogun area for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period. He acknowledged the inconvenience that major civil works often cause but noted that their understanding was vital to the project’s success.

Highlighting the economic benefits, the Governor noted that the rehabilitated road would significantly reduce travel time, enhance market access for agricultural and commercial goods, and invigorate businesses along the corridor. He described it as a catalyst for localised development and a stepping stone towards building a dynamic and resilient urban economy in Akure.

Also speaking at the event, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr Olawoye Abiola, disclosed that the newly commissioned roads cover a combined length of seven kilometres. He added that several other road projects are underway across the state and will be completed in phases.

“These roads are not merely physical structures; they represent the Governor’s vision for a modern, connected, and economically vibrant Ondo State,” Engr Abiola said.

In a goodwill message, the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, praised the Governor for his swift and responsive approach to the developmental needs of the Akure people. He described the projects as timely and impactful, noting that the roads would bring great relief to commuters and boost commercial activities within the city.

“We are glad that under this administration, Akure is witnessing genuine development. These roads have long needed attention, and we are grateful the Governor has acted promptly,” the monarch stated.

The Chairman of Akure South Local Government Area, Hon Gbenga Fasua, also expressed appreciation on behalf of the local government and residents, noting that the projects reflect the Governor’s inclusive leadership and his dedication to fulfilling promises to the people.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Francis Fasoranti, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his steadfast commitment to infrastructure renewal and people-centred leadership.

Dr Fasoranti lauded the Governor for setting a purposeful governance pace within his first 100 days and assured the public of more impactful projects in the near future.

Among those present were the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, represented by the Majority Leader, Hon Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi; Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa; Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip; traditional rulers; and other dignitaries.
