Curriculum designers have been charged to effectively mainstream the challenges and aspirations of the people into a more functional and result-oriented National Policy on Education so as to accelerate the development of the country across frontiers.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu stated this delivering a lecture titled: ‘The Role of Alumni Associations In The Development of Education In Nigeria’ at the 2019 Annual Luncheon of the Government College Ibadan, Old Boys Association, Ibadan branch.

He said the system of training and nurturing the citizenry to maturity and efficiency must be purposeful.

The governor who affirmed that the process of capacity building for citizens must be geared towards achieving specific ends for societal growth and development , categorically stated that the satisfaction realisable from addressing the compelling needs of a society is largely predicated upon the quality of education acquired by its citizens.

Arakunrin Akeredolu used the occasion to charge alumni associations to rise up to the challenge of contributing to nation building by waking up from their state of complacency and becoming agents of change.

He said alumni associations are assemblage of experts in different fields whose wealth of experience and knowledge must now be deployed into the service of their fatherland.

While commending the contributions of the Old Boys Association of Government College Ibadan to infrastructural upgrade of the school, Governor Akeredolu urged them to harness their potentials at training the young ones and retraining those he said have been left confused as a result of the moribund and unproductive system in a bid to appreciate the values of patriotism.

He advised alumni associations to rise and fight for relevance at this crucial moment of Nigerian national life as the elites could not afford to espouse an ideology alien and inimical to the well-being of Nigerians, just as he advocated a pragmatic consensus for translating the yearnings and aspirations of the people to positive reality.

Earlier in his address, the National President of Government College Ibadan, Old Boys Association, Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN, had commended members on their efforts at giving back to their alma mater through the initiation of various projects at repositioning the school.

He hinted on the desire of the Old Boys to seek the approval of Oyo State Government, on the need to grant full autonomy and responsibility to the Old Boys to begin to run the school.

Dignitaries across sectors who are mainly Old Boys of the college attended the programme.
