The Ondo State Police Command has warned against a planned protest by a group identified as the Akoko Youth Movement, cautioning that any disruption of public peace will not be tolerated.
In a statement made available to The Hope, the Command disclosed that it had received what it described as “credible intelligence” indicating that the group was mobilising to stage a protest in some parts of the state.
While acknowledging the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, the police said the relative calm and stability being enjoyed in the state was the result of “deliberate and sustained efforts” by security agencies.
The statement read, “The Command will not tolerate any protest or gathering capable of threatening the relative peace currently being enjoyed across the state.”
The Command expressed concern that criminal elements might hijack the planned protest, potentially plunging the state into chaos and endangering lives and property.
It, therefore, urged members of the public to adopt lawful and civil means of expressing their grievances, including engaging relevant authorities through dialogue.
The police also appealed to parents, guardians, traditional rulers, and community leaders to caution their children and wards against engaging in any act capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
“The safety and security of all residents remain our top priority,” the statement concluded, assuring that the Command will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and stability in Ondo State.
