Akure court grants aunt custody of two boys

Father to pay N10,000 monthly upkeep

By Joshua Babatunde

An Akure Magistrate’s Court has awarded the custody of two young boys to their maternal aunt, Funke Aremo, following a custody dispute with their father, one Samuel Akanbi.

The case arose after the death of the children’s mother, who had been their primary caregiver. Since her passing, Aremo was said to have been fully responsible for the boys’ welfare, education and daily care.

During the proceedings, the children told the court that they prefer to remain with their aunt, who they described  as their main source of support and care, even before their mother’s death.

In her judgment, Magistrate Aiti Falana stated that the court’s decision was based on the best interest of the children.

She said the father, a barber who also trades in electronics, had not shown adequate financial stability or consistent involvement in the children’s lives.

“The welfare of the children is paramount.

“The father has not demonstrated capacity to meet their needs, Magistrate Falana said.

The court granted Aremo full custody of the children and awarded weekend visitation rights to Akanbi.

In addition, the court ordered the father to pay N10,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children.

Speaking after the ruling, Aremo said she was relieved by the outcome and committed to continuing her care for the boys.

The judgment has been noted by child welfare advocates in the state as one that prioritises the children’s best interest.
