Alleged extortion: Ondo Police probe DPO

By Bukola Olamona

The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of extortion levelled against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Igbara-Oke, Ganiyu Dauda, following a protest by residents of the town in Ifedore Local Government Area.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Olusola Ayanlade, who confirmed the development on Friday, disclosed that although no formal complaint had been received, the command had begun probing the claims.

He called on members of the public with credible evidence to come forward and assist the investigation.

“The command has begun investigation into the allegation of extortion involving the DPO of Igbara-Oke,” Ayanlade said.

“However, as we speak, no formal complaint has been lodged against the officer. We are calling on anyone with credible evidence to come forward.”

The investigation followed a protest staged by irate residents in the town, who took to the streets with placards and tree branches, accusing the DPO and his officers of running an extortion racket from the police station.

The demonstrators blocked the main road leading into the town, chanting solidarity songs and calling on the state government and police authorities to take decisive action before the situation deteriorates.

While addressing the situation, Ayanlade attributed the protest to a disagreement between some commercial drivers and officers of the division over the towing of a vehicle involved in an accident to the Igbara-Oke Divisional Police Station.

He added that the issue had since been resolved by the local government chairman but did not comment on the specifics of the extortion allegations.

The police spokesman urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while assuring them that no officer found culpable would be shielded.

“We will not shield any officer found wanting. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” he said.
