After months of planning, the much touted Operation Amotekun, the South West Joint Security Patrol outfit kicks off tomorrow amidst anxiety.

Security experts who spoke with The Hope yesterday expressed optimism that the coming on board of the security outfit may end the nightmare of insecurity across the state.

A former Commissioner of Police in River State, Mr Samuel Adetuyi said the launch of the outfit was a welcome development which will herald peace and harmony to the region.

Adetuyi, now a legal practitioner said the regional security outfit will reassure the people that government cares for their security.

He said with its debut,  business growth will be boosted while the residents would now be able to sleep with their eyes closed.

Adetuyi lauded South West governors for their initiative and urged them to provide the needed financial and logistic support to make the security outfit a huge success.

His words: “Operation Amotekun should be encouraged by everybody. It is an innovation and the grey areas must be continuously looked into for the operation to succeed.  It is a move against hoodlums ravaging the Southwest, but the relationship between the stakeholders must be thoroughly looked into and all aspects must be resolved for the programme to succeed.

“Police have the constitutional right to protect the states, but police cannot do it all alone, others joining the police, their operations must be looked into intently, for all different approaches to crime, different views and all these differences must be resolved for the outfit to have great success.

“I love the enthusiasm of stakeholders in the region to wipe out the scourge,  but there must not be an ego issue in this case. Everybody must downplay ego for Amotekun to work”.

Meanwhile, Ondo State Commandant of Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, Mr Busuyi Ojo Asoga, a.k.a Ijaya said his men are ready for the take off of Amotekun

He said it will chase out criminals from Ondo state and south West in general.

The OPC leader said all security agencies have agreed to work together to ensure the success of the regional security outfit.

Senior Special Assistant, SSA  to Ondo  State Governor on Security, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo said the essence of the operation  is  to curtail  security challenges in the south west zone.

Dojumo hinted that the Assistant Inspector General of police in charge of zone 11 AIG Adeleye Oyebade and  all the States Police commissioners, Directors, State Security Service (DSS), commandant of state Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) among other relevant stakeholders across the zone would be present at the Thursday launch.

He said necessary security logistics would be provided for the effective take off of the operation adding that operational vehicles, motorcycles and communication gadgets have also been procured.

According to the SSA, all the governors of South west states would be in attendance at the event and that the Ondo state governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu would chair the occasion.

He described security as a panacea to development adding that various relevant stakeholders would be incorporated in the operation of Amotekun saying the job of effective security is for all and sundry.
