Anxiety in Akure as hoodlums attack NURTW members
There was a palpable anxiety on Sunday when some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Akure, Ondo State, including Omoniyi Oni popularly known as Eniba and Wasiu Ibrahim were attacked by suspected hoodlums.
They were allegedly attacked at a Barbing saloon at Owode in Akure, the state capital on Sunday which caused apprehension among residents of the area for hours.
One Mr. Oni Omoniyi popularly known as ’Eniba’, claimed that the attackers were allegedly sponsored by a former Chairman of the union.
He said some of them sustained varying degrees of injuries and are now receiving treatment at the police clinic in the metropolis.
Omoniyi narrated that some of their members were on their way to a barber’s shop when they were attacked by thugs known to be loyal to the ex-Chairman of the union.
He said it was not the first time they would be experiencing such occurrence.
“We are members of the APC and not opposition members. We all worked for the emergence of the Government in the first and second terms.
“Governor Akeredolu is a lover of all and he has instructed us not to fight anyone, but we were victimised for no reason.
“The former Chairman will seize our vehicles, and order his thugs to vandalise them.
“The Governor had instructed that the union should suspend its activities for now but they are still collecting illegal money from us, attacking anyone who is not in their clique and group,” Eniba alleged.
Lamidi Akure and Sunday Aladejebi Mosafejo, therefore called on the State Governor to come to their aid as they could no longer stand the provocation.
A security source said no arrest has been made concerning the attack.
