APC Forum urges Tinubu to protect performing governors like Alia

By Henry Iyorkase, Makurdi

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the party to take decisive steps to protect performing governors under its platform, including Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State.

The forum, in a statement released on Wednesday by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, urged the party to shield governors like Alia, who have demonstrated exemplary performance in office.

The forum also expressed concern over the interference of “so-called godfathers or kingmakers” who attempt to frustrate the efforts of such governors and public officials who refuse to cater to their selfish interests.

During a visit to Benue State, the forum inspected several ongoing projects initiated by Alia’s administration.

These include the ongoing transformation of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, the ₦1.6 billion waterworks project, a cancer treatment centre, completed and ongoing road projects, as well as the underpass projects in Makurdi and Gboko.

The forum also took note of significant road projects such as the Manyam–Unongo Village–Adikpo road and the Tyowanye–Uga road, and the renovation of the 40-year-old State Secretariat and reconstruction of the State Assembly complex.

Governor Alia has been embroiled in a political struggle with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and his predecessor, Chief Samuel Ortom.

The political rift has led to the factionalisation of the Benue chapter of the APC, raising concerns over Alia’s chances for re-election.

Despite the political turmoil, the North-Central APC Forum commended the governor for his resilience in advancing development in Benue State.

“The Forum is pleased to observe that despite distractions, Governor Hyacinth Alia is silently transforming Benue State with several laudable, impactful projects,” Zazzaga said in the statement.

The forum praised Alia’s efforts to uplift the state’s infrastructure, including urban renewal initiatives like the underpass projects in Makurdi and Gboko, which aim to ease traffic congestion, enhance the aesthetic appeal, and boost the state’s revenue. It also highlighted the Light-up Makurdi project, which is expected to improve the state capital’s competitiveness with other major cities.

Alia’s commitment to upgrading the Benue University Teaching Hospital was also noted, particularly the ₦2 billion donation to establish a cancer centre.

Furthermore, the forum celebrated the establishment of various local industries, including a polythene and nylon factory, a nail production company, a fashion and ICT hub, as well as expansions of bread and water factories, all of which are expected to create hundreds of jobs.

The forum also underscored the success of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) project, which includes the rehabilitation of dams, the renovation of agricultural warehouses, and the distribution of solar-powered irrigation pumps to farmers.

In light of these achievements, the North-Central APC Forum gave Governor Alia a “passing mark” and endorsed his bid for a second term. The forum called on President Tinubu and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje to protect Alia, who it identified as a key asset for the party in the North-Central region.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu, the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and other leaders of the party to protect Governor Hyacinth Alia, who we have identified as a valuable asset of the party in the North-Central region,” the forum concluded.
