As We Celebrate Christmas
CHRISTMAS, the special event that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, is a season synonymous with the show of love, joy and giving. It is also a time when families and friends come together to wine and dine and exchange gifts. Gifts are also extended to the less-privileged, such as orphanages and poor neighbours. It is a time of spiritual and social festivities all over the world.
THE air is already filled with the aura of Christmas as organisations, churches, families, and individuals put finishing touches to their preparations for the event. A lot goes into preparing for Christmas, ranging from decorations to carols, gifts, special meals, unique outfits, and more.
CHRISTMAS is more than just festivities and gift-giving. It is also a time to reflect on the significance of the birth of Jesus Christ. There are many lessons to learn for both believers and non-believers from the birth of Christ, especially if Nigeria, in particular, and the world, in general, are to become better places. Christ gave Himself as a ransom for the sin of the world. This act was a demonstration of His boundless love for the human race. His death also brought about peace between man and God as He reconciled humanity back to God. He gave Himself sacrificially to restore humanity to its original state of sinlessness, and all who come to Him are made whole. His birth in a humble manger further exemplifies His profound humility.
BEYOND the merriment of Christmas, The Hope calls on believers not to forget the true essence of the celebration. They should use the occasion to show love to their neighbours. Love fosters mutual respect, acknowledges and values individuality, opinions, and feelings. It builds trust, honesty and acceptance. Showing love can go a long way in encouraging peaceful coexistence. With love, we can trust and accept one another, irrespective of religious differences. Love can reduce societal ills such as banditry, kidnapping, and other vices, to make the nation a better place.
THE HOPE therefore urges adherents to use this occasion to give as Christ gave Himself to the world, not just to family and friends but also to the less privileged, orphanages, people of other religions, and the needy in the society. We must remember that many people wish to celebrate but lack the means. Acts of generosity, no matter how small, have the power to brighten lives and create lasting impacts. Give to your neighbours, friends, and even foes. Give according to your ability, and do not resort to stealing just to give. As we celebrate, let us support one another with our gifts to make our nation a better place.
FOR us in The Hope, we urge Nigerian leaders to do more. They need to emulate the selfless leadership of Christ, who served His followers selflessly. Leaders should serve not for personal gain but for the benefit of the people. Political leaders must ensure that the nation’s resources are channelled to benefit all Nigerians. Christ ensured that His followers did not lack while He was on earth. Similarly, our political leaders must ensure the dividends of democracy reach everyone. They should work toward finding lasting solutions to insecurity, fixing the education sector so children of the poor can access quality education, ensuring access to healthcare, and addressing infrastructure challenges. Our roads must cease to be death traps, and other critical sectors must be improved.
THE HOPE also calls on religious leaders of all faiths to teach their followers the truth. They must prioritize the spiritual and moral lives of their followers rather than focusing on personal enrichment. By doing so, peace will reign in our society, and the world will become a better place for all.
THE HOPE also cautions Nigerians not to use this festive occasion to exploit one another. During this period, sellers often inflate prices unnecessarily, transporters charge higher fares, and artisans demand more for their services. This opportunistic behaviour is detrimental, making life more difficult for many. As a people, we must avoid these practices and instead act with fairness and integrity.
SO, as we celebrate Christmas, let us remember what the birth of Christ signifies. Let us learn from Him, be humble, and follow His example, as highlighted in Matthew 11:29. Let us show love to one another, give generously within our means, and avoid exploiting others. Above all, let us pursue peace with all people, so Nigeria can become a
