The Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Most Rev’d Dr John Oyejola has charged Christians and political leaders to examine their way of life and return to God through sincere repentance.

The cleric gave the admonition during the Ash Wednesday thanksgiving which heralds the fasting period.

Bishop Oyejola said Ash Wednesday reminds us that unto dust we came and unto dust shall we return.

He said Nigerians need a change of heart by doing the right thing, saying both the leaders and the led must accept to change from their previous ways of life by doing the right thing and also ask God for mercy.

“Every one of us need to change his or her attitude. Lenten season is a period of self examination, penance, personal fortification, almsgiving and total change of heart.

“If you are a government worker, don’t hide another person’s file and deny them their promotion. Don’t hide the file of pensioners in order to deny them their entitlements. If you are a businessman or woman, don’t sell fake product to anyone just to make gains. Leaders must be sincere to the people they are bound to cater for.

“if you are a councillor and police stopped you for check, obey him and if the police man is not doing the right thing  please summon courage to correct him, change is for all of us,”he stated.

The clergyman who enjoined Catholics to attend every programme during the lenten season, reminded them that Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and as such, “we must all try to carry out our lenten observance.
