Avoid politicizing Amotekun recruitment, Osun civil society group warns

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

As the Osun State Government begins recruiting 1,000 cadets for the Amotekun Corps, a civil society coalition has cautioned against politicizing the process.

The group, known as TOP, is a civil society organization committed to ensuring equity, fairness, and justice.

Governor Ademola Adeleke recently approved the recruitment of 1,000 cadets to strengthen security across the state, with the process commencing last week.

Addressing journalists at its monthly State-of-the-State address in Osogbo, TOP’s Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, emphasized that the hiring of security personnel should be based on patriotism rather than political affiliation.

“Given the sensitive nature of the Amotekun Corps, we urge the Ademola Adeleke-led administration to ensure that recruitment is not influenced by politics. Only individuals genuinely committed to safeguarding lives and property should be employed,” he said.

While commending the government for its plans to recruit personnel into the Amotekun Corps and the Imole Youth Empowerment Scheme, Oyedokun-Alli stressed the importance of an inclusive and merit-based selection process.

“Recruiting for these initiatives will not only provide employment in the short and long term but also contribute to human capacity development in our state.

The growing number of unemployed youths is a major concern, and large-scale recruitment efforts like this are welcome,” he added.

However, he warned that, as seen in past government recruitments, political influence could undermine the intended benefits of such programs.
