Awujale revives push for creation of Ijebu State

Daniel presents memorandum, outlines proposed LGAs

The revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has reiterated his unwavering commitment to the creation of Ijebu State, a cause that has long symbolised the aspirations of the Ijebu people.

Speaking at his palace in Ijebu-Ode during the presentation of a memorandum to the National Assembly Committee on State Creation, Oba Adetona described the campaign as a moral and historical imperative.

He argued that the Ijebu people, with their rich cultural heritage, economic vibrancy and unified identity, deserve recognition through a state of their own.

Oba Adetona, known for his steadfast leadership, pledged to continue championing the cause.

He stated that the creation of Ijebu State would not only address decades of neglect but also unlock the region’s full potential.

The monarch added that the tourism potential of Ijebuland, coupled with its entrepreneurial spirit, positions it to thrive as a standalone state.

Presenting the memorandum on behalf of the Ijebu people, Senator Gbenga Daniel highlighted the economic and administrative viability of the proposed state.

He provided a detailed proposal outlining the local governments to be included, such as Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu North, Ijebu East, Ijebu North-East, Odogbolu, Sagamu, Remo North and Ogun Waterside.

He noted that these areas form a cohesive unit with shared values and history, making them ripe for self-governance.

In his address, the former governor stressed the need for the federal government to correct the historical oversight that left Ijebu Province without statehood.

He reminded the audience that Ijebu was one of Nigeria’s 24 provinces during the colonial era before its merger with Abeokuta Province to form Ogun State in 1976.

This merger, according to him, has perpetuated political and economic marginalisation for the Ijebu people.

Oba Adetona echoed these sentiments, commending Senator Daniel’s efforts as a reflection of true statesmanship.

He urged all stakeholders to set aside personal interests and focus on the collective good, particularly regarding contentious issues such as the choice of the state capital.

The senator’s memorandum outlined the proposed local governments for Ijebu State, which include Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu North, Ijebu East, Ijebu North-East, Odogbolu, Remo North, Sagamu and Ogun Waterside.

Senator Daniel pointed to the region’s industrial base, agricultural productivity and thriving commercial hubs such as Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu and Ago-Iwoye as proof of its viability.

Major towns like Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye, he noted, are already economic powerhouses that could form the backbone of the new state.

The renewed agitation has gained momentum at both grassroots and leadership levels. Community members have mobilised through rallies, town hall meetings and advocacy campaigns, showcasing overwhelming support for the creation of Ijebu State.

Cultural groups, youth associations and professional bodies have also joined the call, framing it as a people-driven movement for equity and justice.

Senator Daniel described the renewed push as an opportunity for Nigeria to deepen its commitment to true federalism.

He called on the National Assembly to prioritise the proposal, noting that the unity and resolve of the Ijebu people offer a compelling case for state creation.

The event saw a strong turnout of traditional rulers, political leaders and other key stakeholders, including the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, and the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi.
