Benin city, the capital of Edo state came alive as the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) finally dunk off as 9,221 athletes compete in 40 sporting events.
The games had been with several postponements due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
The National Sports Festival “tagged Edo 2020” witnessed 15 sporting events in day one on Easter Sunday.
Combat Sports like Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Boxing had earlier their weigh in on Saturday before their event yesterday.
Abula, a traditional sport and Handball took the center stage at the sports complex, University of Benin while Badminton held theirs at the Sports Hall, Etete Gymnasium.
Boxing set it’s ring at the Oba Akenzuwa Cultural Center, Airport road same venue for Kokowa while Cricket kicked start at Adolor College, Ugbowo, Benin City.
Cycling and Hockey begun at Airport road, Aruogba, GRA, Benin/Ifon Road, St. Maria Gorreti College, Dumez Road, respectively while Judo spread its mat at Indoor Hall, University of Benin.
Karate, Kickboxing, Squash, Swimming, Kung-Fu and Tennis held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Thirty six states including the FCT have registered for the National Sports Festival with 9,221 Athletes, 5,771 are males while 3,450 are females.
Medals will be competed for in 40 Sports as many athletes will be hoping to write their names in gold.
The opening ceremony will come up on Tuesday April 6, 2021 and will be graced by Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare Akin.
Meanwhile, the torch of unity after going round the 18 local governments in Edo State will arrive at the Main Bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium April 6 where Governor Godwin Obaseki will put it up.
