The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has paid a working visit to officers and men of the 32 Artillery Brigade at Owena Cantonment, Akure.

Accompanied during the visit by some Principal Staff Officers from Army Headquarters, the Army Chief addressed the officers, commending their efforts in securing the nation.

“You are all doing well. Collectively, we are securing Nigeria together, and I say well done.

“My command philosophy is simple; soldiers come first. In everything, the welfare of soldiers must take precedence.

“Keep that in mind, and if you understand who you are, you’ll know that this is the way to go,” he stated.

Acknowledging the security challenges facing the country, the COAS emphasised the critical role of the military and other security agencies in safeguarding Nigeria.

“We are doing our best alongside other security agencies. But I want to remind you this afternoon that the entire Nigerian state and its people are counting on you to confront these challenges.

“Security is the foundation of development, and without it, progress is impossible. Whether we like it or not, insecurity affects all of us,” he said.

He also highlighted the government’s financial commitment to security, stressing the need for optimal utilisation of resources.

“The government is spending huge sums on security.

“If we can secure Nigeria better, those resources can be redirected towards improving the lives of all Nigerians. That is why I am asking you to do even more,” he noted.

The COAS reassured the troops of ongoing efforts to improve their welfare and that of their families.

“We are making preparations to ensure that you and your families have a good place to stay. I have already told you this will be done, and we will remain focused on delivering on that promise,” he said.

Reiterating the expectations placed on the army, General Oluyede urged the troops to double their efforts.

“Nigerians are looking up to us. This means you must be ready to work harder.

“Yesterday, at the division headquarters, I was briefed that at least 100,000 new uniforms will be produced every month.

“The first batch will be distributed between 81 Division and 2 Division starting tomorrow. If it does not begin as planned, let me know,” he assured them.

He also warned of the increasing movement of criminal elements into the Southwest and charged the troops to be vigilant.

“As we continue tackling crime, we have observed that some criminals are moving towards the Southwest.

“We must not allow a replication of the insecurity seen in the North and other regions. Brace up for this challenge, develop the right attitude, and do your job well,” he urged.

The COAS further reminded the troops of their responsibilities, urging them to uphold professionalism and discipline.

“When you are sent out on operations, carry out your duties diligently and responsibly.

“Follow the guidance of experienced senior officers. I can assure you, doing so will make a difference in your career,” he said.

He concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to their welfare while reminding them of their duty.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and it is our collective responsibility to make it safer and better for future generations.

“As your leader, alongside my team, I will do my best to support you, but you must also be ready to do your part. This is a covenant between us. I will lead you well and provide for you, but you must be committed to your duty,” he declared.

The Army Chief then opened the floor for questions, inviting officers to share any challenges they faced.

“If you have any issues, whatever they may be, tell me. I will listen and take action,” he assured them.
