Tragedy struck in Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government area of Ondo State, on Wednesday evening, as a trailer loaded with cement reportedly lost its brake, crushing several people to death.
The accident, which occurred near the popular Holy Trinity Church, threw the university community into panic, as residents rushed to the scene.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said, “Trailer was coming from up, we couldn’t say if the barricade was opened, because some people said the trailer destroyed the barricade. Like five people have died while we don’t know how many are under the trailer.”
As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations were ongoing, while the exact number of casualties had yet to be confirmed.
The tragic incident brought back painful memories of previous accidents in the area, which have claimed many lives over the years.
