NUJ elects new President, other officers
Alhaji Alhassan Yahya has been elected and inaugurated as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Alhassan, from the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, scored 436 votes to defeat two other contestants.
The new president, who is the immediate past National Deputy President, defeated the immediate past National Treasurer of the union, Mr Dele Atunbi, who scored 97 votes, and Garba Muhammad, who polled 39 votes.
Alhassan and other executives were elected during the 8th Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the union, held in Owerri, Imo State.
Also elected unopposed was the Deputy National President, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde, General Manager of Radio Nigeria Bronze FM in Edo State and former BOT member of the union.
Comrade Oyetunde, by this feat, becomes the first female Deputy National President of the NUJ.
Other national officers of the union were also elected unopposed, including the National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who is the former Abia State Council Chairman. Meanwhile, Ronke Samo was re-elected unopposed as the Vice President of the B-Zone (Southwest).
The election, conducted amidst tight security, was chaired by Comrade Mike Ikeogwu as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and presided over by a representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
In his inaugural speech, Alhassan said his victory symbolises unity, stating, “No victor, no vanquished.”
